41st 7 Mile Bridge Run One for the Books

7 Mile Bridge Conch Republic Florida Keys Marathon Running

The 41st running of the annual 7 Mile Bridge Run occurred last weekend and for all those who were lucky enough to secure a spot, it was a resounding success.

Each year, just over 1500 entrants line up at the start of the bridge (historically the North end but for the past two years, the Big Pine side), and await the gunshot signaling the race has begun.  The race itself is a bit shorter than the name implies, measuring just over 6.8 miles but with the Florida Keys heat beating down on you, even as the sun has barely arisen, a large "hill" to climb as you summit Moser Channel where sailboats pass beneath the bridge, and not a stitch of shade to be found, the race is as challenging as one of at least seven full miles, if not more.

This year's winner, Collin Wainwright, completed the course in 38:06, a pace of 5:33 per mile.  The first local to cross the finish line was Big Pine Key resident and Marathon High School track star Vaclav "Vance" Bursa, who finished in third place.  At only 14 years old, he has quite a future in front of him as well as a great foundation in his mother, Helena, who finished in the number three spot herself a few years ago.

While the vibrant shirts like the one pictured here are reserved for runners, you can secure a great 7 Mile Grill Print and other great Keys-themed items right here from The Keys Store.
